Abstract
This study uses the contingent valuation method to determine and analyze the factors which influence the willingness to pay (WTP) for improved solid waste management in the city Issers, Algeria. The objective was to estimate how the decision to participate financially in a new program of solid waste management differs between the persons interrogated with regard to the social and professional characteristics. The variable “distance to landfill site” and environmental variables were included in the model. A dichotomous choice contingent valuation technique was used to elicit households’ willingness to pay for an improvement in management of their solid waste. The results reveal that the significant factors determining households’ decision of the WTP for improved solid waste management are the income, age, educational level, type of house and the distance of the landfill site with regard to the inhabitants.
