Abstract

An inquiry has been done during many years in the big areas of distribution of camels throught three regions in Souf (SouthEst), Hoggar (Extreem south), Tindouf (SouthWest), the survey allowed us to conclude that Camel breeding is an important part of local communities livelihoods, thanks to its multiple functionalities. But despite its potential and specificities, it has remained a marginal activity, thus leading to a decline of herd sizes and erosion of the camel commodity system. However, given the development potential of camelbased productions, this trend can be reversed. Proposals are made regarding some technical and technical and institutional aspects likely to help rehabilitate and develop camel breeding in Algeria.
