Abstract
Absent in the earliest model of industrialization, R&D occurred tardily in Algerian industry, evolving differently from a company to the other. This article presents the R&D situation in five public companies, representing different sectors; it analyzes the socioprofessional and organisational conditions underlying the emergence of this new activity. Various factors of differentiation observed (market and management style, strategy to access to the technological renewal, statute and position of research engineers...) allowed to the authors to identify two ways of insertion of R&D in the companies system : a "wedged" model where it occupies a segment relatively dissociated of the other activities and an "incorporated" model where it appears in a transversally position. These two models determine the place and the role of R&D and define its statute and that of the social actors devoted to it.
