Abstract

In order to create wealth throughout development and diversification of the productive system, developing countries became very interested in learning from the experiences of the industrialized countries. The previous studies have highlighted the role of entrepreneurship in the economic development of countries (Thomas and Meller, 2000), job creation (birch, 1987), economic growth (Acs and Armington, 2003) and innovation (Reynolds et al., 1994).
However, studies dealing with the issue of Algerian student entrepreneurship remains really scarce. This paper fills this research gap through exploring a survey conducted among Algerian students (2011). In parallel with their Canadian counterparts (Quebec) and European (France and Belgium), this paper compare student’s intentions to become entrepreneur and highlight differences by psychological, sociocultural and economic factors that may influence this intention. The results clearly show, that the analyzes of the entire sample confirm the relevance of Ajzen's (1991) theory of planned behavior. However, the analysis of the results by cultural group show that the theory of planned behavior does not work in the case of Algerian students. Furthermore, we did not find an impact of our control variables on the intention to become an entrepreneur, which is not in line with the Canadian and European students’ case.
Given the Algerian socio-economic context, it could be deduced that Algerian entrepreneurship of university students is more of an entrepreneurship of necessity than of opportunity.
