Abstract
During the years of administrated economy, public policies implemented in Algeria as regards to the poultry farming, increased the consumption of animals protein through the constitution of an important public sector. Starting from the SAP implementation in 1994, the poultry farming sector continued to grew – under the cover of a still highly protected market – with a greater private sector involvement. However, faced with the globalization, it remains very fragile. In fact, when the foreign branches, mainly american, brazilian and European reached their cruising speed, the algerian industry remains far from being competitive. Livestock too small to benefit from economies of scale, overconsumption of food, high level of mortality are the main factors behind the high costs. Nevertheless, some poultry farmers could upgrade without too much trouble and bear a certain competition.
